Meeting Minutes
Present: Amy Benson, Earle Robbins, Helaine Brown, Suzanne Boartz, Claudia Mincemoyer (chair)
Camper and Educator Surveys
The committee reviewed the surveys and agreed that they should be distributed in summary form to the RDs, CEDs and 4-H educators. Claudia will send them to these groups.
Parent and Camp Counselor Evaluations
The camp directors recommended that the camp counselors and parents be surveyed next summer for their perceptions about the impact of 4-H camp. The curriculum committee concurred with this recommendation.
Standardized statements for youth with disabilities and behavior problems.
Two standardized statements will recommended to be included on camper registration forms. these statements will be put in the Policy Manual. The curriculum committee also agreed to review the camping section of the 4-H Policy Manual to make sure it is accurate.
Outdoor Adventures and Shaver’s Creek Collaboration
The committee agreed that the collaboration with Shaver’s Creek was positive and would support additional training opportunities to follow-up on the Outdoor Adventures curriculum training. It would be best to offer the training no later than the end of March as most camps begin counselor training in April.
Camp Stamp USA
Camp Stamp USA is a national non-profit organization that trains leaders to run 1-2 day stamp camps. They have already done training in McKean/Potter and Tioga counties. Claudia is meeting with the director of the program in November to talk about statewide training and how the program would complement the Collectibles project.
Shooting Sports Update
Earle discussed the shooting sports training to be held in April. They had 46 participants attend the training in September. They have received $5,000 from the Turkey Federation for the trainings. Earle will send grant opportunities for Archery and other shooting sports programs to all counties.
Future Curriculum/Training Needs
Amy discussed the importance of safety and health standards at camp and spoke very highly of the ACA Regional Camp Training. There are national standards for accreditation that can be followed even if the camp group decides not to follow through on becoming accredited. They can significantly improve the camping experience and make the counselors, volunteers and paid staff much better prepared. Amy and Helaine will discuss the standards and their impact on local camps at the next Camp Directors meeting. Claudia will pursue funding for sending one representative from each camp group to the regional conference. (March 17-19, 2005)
The next meeting of this curriculum committee will be Spring, 2005.
