4-H Outdoor Adventures-
The curriculum committee is going to review the draft of the curriculum for recommendation to be purchased in 2004. Claudia will solicit feedback prior to the January/February Curriculum Management Team meeting. The committee was supportive of the project area and felt it is needed based on the contents described in the brochure.
Claudia is going to share a copy with Christy Bartley who will send to Dave Ferris for review. We need to determine if our volunteers will have liability insurance when using the project and if training will be a required component.
Mark McLaughlin from Shaver’s Creek is chair of the design team for this curriculum. He is willing to provide training for our educators and/or volunteers. He also has been in contact with the “Leave No Trace” organization who provides training and workshops on environmental ethics. “Leave No Trace” is an important component of the curriculum and a sponsoring agency. Mark was proposing a three-day workshop; 2 days on “Leave No Trace” (provided for free from LNT) and 1 day on the curriculum. The committee recommended a shorter workshop on the Outdoor Adventures curriculum only. The “Leave No Trace” curriculum could be a follow-up in subsequent years. The dates that will be proposed are April 14-15 and May 12-13. The in-service will be held at Shaver’s Creek.
Youth Development Foundations for 4-H Camp Staff-
This is a training curriculum for camp counselors developed by Cornell staff. The authors are willing to conduct a training in PA; however, there is a fee for the one or two-day workshops. The curriculum committee felt it would be more beneficial to have representatives from each of the camping groups and associations to attend a workshop that would introduce the curriculum and allow time for sharing ideas for using the curriculum. The committee didn’t think it required training to use the manual. A training format is also provided in the manual. The committee suggested that each camp group purchase at least one of the manuals from Cornell for $24.00. Claudia will contact the camp groups and see what date will work in February for a meeting. The committee knew of the following camp directors and/or chairs who should be invited. Claudia will have to verify these names and assure it is a complete list.
Shehaqua: Rick Kauffman, Helaine Brown
NC: Amy Bensen, Don Tanner
Brulee: Ed Horning, Sam Nicola, Joe Fuller
SW: Susan Taylor, Joann Logan, Carol Schurman
PA Statewide Camping Evaluation
the curriculum committee reviewed a statewide camping evaluation conducted by Virginia. The evaluation consisted of three comprehensive outcome evaluations to be completed by 1.) campers; 2)their parents/guardians, and 3) camp staff, extension educators and volunteers. We discussed the importance of being able to document the life skills learned and the overall value of camp to the youth who attend. This evaluation would begin that process. Each committee member is charged with obtaining input from their region/camping group and sending it to Claudia by January 17, 2004.
Claudia will discuss with the regional directors to see if there are any specific questions that they want included on the surveys. Also, we need to identify a small amount of money to conduct the evaluation (postage, printing and data entry). Claudia estimates this to be about $500.00.
The next meeting is a conference call scheduled for February 19 at 10 a.m. Claudia will send the meet-me phone number closer to the date.
