Leisure Education Curriculum Committee Meeting Minutes

Sub-committee
December 6, 2000

Present: Sallie Gregory, Katina Showman, Pat Freiler, Claudia Mincemoyer, Roxanne Price, Cindy Arblaster

Bicycle Curriculum-The committee reviewed the bicycle project and the fix-it video and recommend both for purchase for use in Pennsylvania. The life skills are clearly identified and the curriculum is presented sequentially for younger to older youth. The committee suggested asking the design team chair (or another member) to introduce the curriculum at an in-service for agents. Claudia will contact Ed Maxxa, design team chair, and see if this is possible.

Cake Decorating-Katina contacted the volunteer leader (Jackie Nelson) who developed her county cake decorating project to discuss using the materials for a statewide project. Jackie is very interested in contributing. There are leaders from other counties who may be interested in contributing. Because much of the information used in the county projects is developed by Wilton, Claudia is going to contact the Wilton educational marketing department and discuss a collaborative effort or permission to use their educational materials in a 4-H project. Katina knows who the Wilton contact is and will send to Claudia.

Collecting Project-The committee recommended adapting this curriculum from Ohio State for Pennsylvania use. Claudia contacted the author who gave permission to do so. She is in the process of negotiating with the publications division about how to receive an electronic version of the project. As soon as she has permission, the committee will provide input on revising the project. The curriculum committee indicated that there are many web links we could reference as well as to allow volunteers to add suggestions to a web site.

Folk Arts and Crafts Update-There was no update on this potential project. Claudia will still make contact with the PA Historical Museum/Society to see what educational materials are already developed. Katina also suggested adding information on square dancing. Franklin county has a county developed tin punch project. The committee will continue to investigate resources for this area.

Stress Connection-The committee recommended revising this project before reprinting. It needs an updated look and a review of the content. This was not determined to be a priority for 2001.

Recreation and Handicapped Youth-This 4-H publication is being reviewed by Terri Jordan from the office of Recreation and Disability Services. The committee agreed that it would be a useful tool to provide to every organizational leader. Claudia will follow up with Terri Jordan.

The committee recommended informing Rob Butler about new curriculum initiatives so that he could identify sponsors or donors for curricula projects. Claudia suggested inviting him to the curriculum management team meeting.

Family Guide Update-Claudia will e-mail the draft of the promotional card to be used to advertise the 4-H web site hosting the Family Guide.

Sport fishing-Sandy Smith and the Natural Resources committee will be responsible for the sport fishing curriculum. 4-H CCS is also developing a sport fishing curriculum. The PA curriculum is underwritten by the PA Fish Commission. Sandy will keep his committee informed about the status of the national curriculum.

Shooting Sports-Michael Martin has revised the air pistol curriculum. The project is currently in editing.

The priority proposals for funding for 2001 will be
1. Bicycle
2. Collecting

Next Meeting Date:

The committee will meet after proposal review by the Curriculum Management Team.
