Curriculum Committee
Conference Call
November 16, 2005
10:00-11:00 a.m.
Members present: Suzanne Boarts, Amy Murphy, Earle Robbins, Cindy Arblaster, Denise Raum (volunteer, Lancaster Co.), Claudia Mincemoyer, chair
4HCCS Health Curriculum: The committee recommended that a proposal to purchase this curriculum be sent to the Curriculum Management Team. It was thought that the projects would be used to a greater extent with some of the urban and rural at-risk audiences, as a supplement to the babysitting project, with groups of youth who have less parental support; however, some of the traditional groups may be interested in first-aid or fitness. Claudia will submit the proposal to the CMT. The committee will assess usage of the curriculum and make recommendations for continued purchased based on first year use by leaders and educators.
Archery Project Book: Denise Raum, Pennsylvania Coordinator for the National Archery in Public Schools Program, volunteered to draft a proposal for revisions to the Archery Project. She is recommending a three-level series. Level 1 would focus on the fundamentals, including form and equipment; Level 2 would focus on skills and techniques, and Level 3 would include accessories, scoring, hunting, and more advanced skills. Information for leaders will be incorporated into the three books as well as put on the Web. Earle Robbins shared that the Shooting Sports Committee is developing a web site that will be linked to the PA 4-H web site. The archery information can be on this site. Because we are proposing a series instead of a revision to the existing book, Claudia thought that we needed to go through the review process in February with the Curriculum Management Team. She will develop a proposal using the information from Denise. Denise is especially concerned that the whistle commands are incorrect in the PA Archery Book and are not in compliance with the National Archery Association. There are incorrect safety commands, some information is stated negatively and there is a need for more photos regarding proper form.
Adult and Teen Volunteer for NE Forum Planning Committee: Christy Bartley requested nominations for a teen and adult volunteer who might be interested in serving on the NE Regional Leaders Planning Committee for a NE Leaders Forum that will focus on Health and Wellness in 2007 in Maine. Every other year, the NE Forum will have a specific topical focus. During even years, it will continue to be a more open forum, similar to the one PA hosted in Lancaster in 2004. Suzanne Boarts recommended Sandy and Faith Huston as potential members of the planning committee.
Camp Director’s Inservice/Shaver’s Creek Collaborations: Claudia provided an update on the Camp Director’s In-service and the potential in-services from Shaver’s Creek. Discussion was that there is a limited audience for the Leave No Trace and Wilderness First Aid training so the numbers will be low. Linking these to existing trainings or inviting extension to other trainings sponsored by Shaver’s Creek are possible solutions. There was enthusiastic support for partnering with Shaver’s Creek on an internship program. Having a parks and recreation student during Spring Semester to help plan and organize camp would be beneficial if the students were not available during the summer for the internship. Suzanne mentioned that there might be funds to pay interns in some offices. Claudia will explore potential with Mark McLaughlin, Shaver’s Creek Director.
Statewide Camp Evaluation
Jill Broschart, Extension educator in Union County, is going to develop a statewide evaluation to be distributed to parents of 4-H campers. She is doing this as part of a graduate class. She will use the curriculum committee for reaction. Claudia asked committee members to send any parental evaluations used to her so that she can share with Jill.
National Camping Institute
Suzanne Boarts is doing a presentation at the National Camping Institute.
