PROJECTS IN THE NATIONAL JURIED CURRICULUM IN EXPRESSIVE ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONS

Reaching out for Teen Awareness
-is a project that uses interactive theatre as a teaching tool. Claudia Mincemoyer will obtain a copy for Patricia Powley to review and make recommendations to the committee. It is probably a good resource to use as a supplement to the Theatre Arts Adventures curriculum.

Communications Toolkit-curriculum from Michigan to help youth increase their formal communication skills. The committee feels that there is a great need for a general communications project. This would support the current communication contests at State Days. Claudia Mincemoyer will order copies of this curriculum for the entire committee to review. Carol Schurman indicated that there was at one time a general communications committee that began to gather information and resources in this area. Claudia Mincemoyer will check with Patreese Ingram.

Art in a Box-creative arts resource with activities to encourage problem solving, multi-sensory activities, and self-expression. The committee felt that the new 4-H CCS curriculum, A Palette of Fun, will probably meet needs in this area. Claudia Mincemoyer will order one copy for review. Nancy Kadwill agreed to review this and share comments with the rest of the committee.

A Palette of Fun-a 4-H CCS visual arts curriculum to be available in 2001. The committee thought that this might replace crafts caravan. Leisel Dreisbach is a pilot county for this project and is going to copy and share her draft with the committee.

Theatre Arts Adventures- Pennsylvania has this project but the enrollment is not very high. Suggestions were made to promote the use of the project. Discussion about theatre camps, theatre/art career tours, and productions for State Days were discussed. Carol Schurman is going to have a workshop at the SE Leader’s Form on this curriculum. She is going to share her experiences with Nancy Kadwill and Leisel Dreisbach who are interested in conducting a volunteer training in the SE/Capital region. Leisel Dreisbach is participating in an Outreach Internship and will be visiting the Theatre Arts Department at Penn State. She will share our curriculum and talk about possible collaborations.

Photography-This curriculum is available through the National 4-H Council. The committee felt that photography should be part of the expressive arts and not leisure education. Claudia Mincemoyer will forward copies of the project to committee members for review. No one knew if photographs submitted to the State Contest were sent on for national competition.
CURRENT PA PROJECTS:

Crafts Caravan
-perhaps could be replaced by "A Palette of Fun" pending committee review.

4-H Presents, How to be a Presenter, How to Speak in Groups, Speak Up, and Tips for Writing your Speech were discussed. Even though distribution of these are low, committee members felt they are being used. Because there is still sufficient inventory, it was decided to keep these in stock.

FUTURE NEEDS:

Poster Development-
there is a need for a publication on how to produce a good poster display. Carol is going to send to Claudia Mincemoyer the old publication, "Ways to Display" for review. The Communications Toolkit may have a sufficient section on poster displays.

Youth Public Speaking Curriculum-several counties are in touch with local toastmasters representatives and Dale Carnegie. It was recommended that new agents be made aware of these resources. The committee wanted to know if there were state contacts for these organizations. Claudia Mincemoyer will follow-up with Bob Lewis.

OTHER:
There was discussion about where to report POW time on expressive arts and communications programs. Claudia Mincemoyer will investigate the best way to report on POWs.
