MINUTES

The following items were discussed:

Small Engines-The committee discussed possible Round Up and Farm Show requirements for this new project area. The following items were discussed. Committee members should respond to Christy with any changes that they would like to see incorporated.

Level 1

1) Display a small engine with external parts identified by name and function
2) Display 10 tools or pictures of 10 tools and describe their functions (If using actual tools be sure to fasten them securely to a display board.)
3) Display or poster focusing on small engine shop safety.

Level 2

1) Display a small engine with internal parts identified by name and function.
2) Display or poster focusing on personal safety in a small engine shop.
3) Display or poster on engine oil viscosity and service classification.

Level 3

1) Display or poster on troubleshooting an engine problem, how the problem was identified, and how it was fixed.
2) Display or poster on the research done in consideration of starting a small engine business.

Christy will check with Jim Garthe and Doug Schaufler about their interest in providing some in-services on the small engines project or recommendations for someone who might assist in those efforts. The Ag and Bio Engineering Department will be starting a certification program in lawn equipment care and maintenance.

Water Curriculum - The question that needs to be addressed in this area: What is missing from the new water curriculum that could be added to the PA 4-H Web page as resources for leaders who want to broaden the study of water beyond the home? Farm-A-Syst might have some work sheets that could be easily adapted for use by youth. Tom has said he will begin working on developing a resource list. Items on the list should include title, author (if available), date of publication, source, and a short description.

Next Steps - At this time the committee does not recommend adding any new curricula to the current offerings. Committee members want to spend their time enhancing current project areas. Committee members will work on the following:

  • Develop a resource list for the rocketry project. Include on the list the NASA/Jet Propulsion Lab materials available on the Web. Katina will check with David Tang, but all committee members should be gathering resources from their regions and sending them to Christy.
  • Develop additional activity sheets for the water curriculum. These will be placed on the Web. Tom will begin working on this but others should also be sharing their resources.
  • Review suggested Farm Show requirements for small engines with agents in their regions. Let Christy know by January 15 if changes are recommended. If committee members do not regularly meet with 4-H agents in their region, they should ask a 4-H agent to take the information to their next meeting.
  • Continue search for person to do in-services on the small engine 4-H project books. Christy will contact some University Park resource people but will also take county suggestions.
  • Explore possibility of working with Schreyer’s Honors College students to write activity sheets to support farm safety and health that will prepare 4-Hers to participate in the Farm Safety and Health Quiz Bowl.
  • Continue the search for an automotive curriculum to be used in the 4-H program.

Next Meeting: October 10, 2002, 2:30 PM by conference call or face-to-face.
