September 2005 Meeting Notes

4-H Curriculum Management Team
September 6, 2005
118 Ag Science and Industries Building

In Attendance: Sanford Smith, Nancy Dreschel, Patrese Ingram, Jan Scholl, Michael Martin, Jackie Bruce, Claudia Mincemoyer, Lydia Everhart, Rich Marini, and Matt Kaplan.

Claudia called the meeting to order and facilitated introductions

Curriculum Process:
Claudia discussed committee expectations, and responsibilities of the chairs. Lydia shared that to make the process easier we will be adding a button to the 4-H Web-site titled Curriculum Management that will have all the information you need to complete proposals, read past minutes, find your committee lists, etc.

Chair reports:
Committee chairs gave committee reports about past and future activities These reports are as follows:

Youth Leadership (Jackie Bruce): This committee is working on a Pennsylvania Teen Council and Ambassador Curriculum. Their goal is to have it completed by Christmas and out to the counties by May of 2006.

Shooting Sports (Michael Martin): This committee is completing a draft for the shotgun project.

Family and Consumer Sciences (Jan Scholl):

  • The 4-H Food leader guide has been revised and is out in the counties
  • EFNEP has taken the section on the new food guide pyramid and put it on web streaming
  • The food guide pyramid inserts are available
  • Leader’s guide to Food Pyramid is in revision
  • Breads Around the World project is completed and being used
  • There are 7 new textile Science patterns on the web
  • Jan will need Farm Show suggestion by January for the 2007 PA Farm Show

Small Animals (Nancy Dresher); the 4-H CCS vet science books have been ordered and will be available this fall.

Plant Sciences (Rich Marini): Rich shared that the 4-H CCS Gardening books have been ordered and will be available this fall and that he will be in-servicing them this spring with Claudia.

Diversity (Patrese Ingram): This committee will be reviewing the 4-H CCS Latino Project for possible addition to the PA curriculum in the 2006-2007 project year. Patrese also shared that she and Jan Scholl will be working on a “Clothes Around the World” project.

Leisure Ed and Communications ( Claudia Mincemoyer): This committee reviewed and proposed that we purchase the Advance Visual Arts Books and they will be available to counties this fall. Claudia also shared that they are having the 2nd level of Outdoor Adventures training at Shaver’s Creek at the end of September.

Intergenerational Programming (Matt Kaplan): Most of the curriculum for this area is web-based. This committee is also working on an intergenerational flyer that will accompany other projects to help create areas for involving generations in project work.

Environmental (Sanford Smith):

  • The PA Fish and Boat Commission has taken the new fishing book back into design. Sandy will send an e-mail to Christy and Marilyn in regards to purchasing some of the 4-H CCS fishing curriculum for this year.
  • There is a forestry book in design/re-vision
  • This committee is going to review the orienteering book and look at revising and in-servicing Spring 2006.

Publication Reports:
Lydia provided the following publication updates.

  • The quarterly reports were distributed and explained.. A revised report will be sent to each chair in the next two weeks.
  • The CCS order had not yet arrived, but should in the next few days.
  • All projects that have been developed by Penn State will be on the web by the end of October.
  • The PDC and 4-H program are considering developing a once a year order for Penn State 4-H publications that would me marketing to other states. The once a year order would give states a price break, and help us decrease the costs of printing our publications. There was discussion about adding additional publications that may not be 4-H projects but would support 4-H programming to the order form. Each chair has been charged with sending Lydia a list of what publications they feel should be marketed.
  • The five year cost review and income statement was distributed and We had an income of $217,000 for fiscal year 04/05 and to-date have spent $35,254.00 in FY 05/06.

National Jury Review:
The National Jury Review process is changing based on recommendations from states and a national steering committee.

Pennsylvania Academic Standards and 4-H Projects

Many of Pennsyvlania 4-H projects have been aligned to academic standards. A marketing post card has been developed to distribute to teachers informing them of the alignment with standards. The marketing card is in the PDC. If anyone has projects that they would like aligned to academic standards please let Claudia know.

Funding Opportunity:
The curriculum enhancement fund is being used to fund selected county and state programs and projects. Christy sent the guidelines. Some support for curriculum development, in-service, etc. may fall under the guidelines. Committee chairs were encouraged to explore potential funding with their committees.

Revised Curriculum Structure:
Several revisions to the curriculum committee structure were discussed and approved. (Please see attached grid for revisions).

The next Curriculum Management Team meeting will be held in February 2006 for proposal review.
