4-H Camping
Each summer over 2,000 4-H members participate in residential camps across the state. Most county 4-H programs conduct resident camps lasting three to five days. These camps provide for opportunities where youth can learn a variety of skills including decision making, problem solving, and leadership; gain an appreciation of the outdoors; and have fun. In addition, counties usually conduct day-long camps during the summer for younger children and for other youth who may not be able to participate in a longer program.
Penn State 4-H Ambassador Program
4-H teens, 15 to 18 years old as of January 1, receive specialized training in public speaking, communications, and social skills. They attend workshops on developing web pages, interacting with the media, and presenting themselves in public. They practice their skills during the conference at a reception and banquet. Participants also learn new games and team building skills while they have fun. The three-day conference is hosted by Penn State at University Park campus either the third or fourth week of June each year. Four-H Ambassadors participate in a variety of promotional activities in their own counties and elsewhere. They promote the Pennsylvania 4-H Program and Penn State. Participants to the conference are able to apply for Junior and Senior Advisor positions to help with future conference planning.
4-H Small Animal Shows
One regional 4-H small animal show is held in mid-September for 4-H members from any Western Pennsylvania county who have small animal projects. 4-H members may show goats, rabbits and dogs at the Western Pennsylvania 4-H Small Animal Show. In Eastern Pennsylvania, 4-H members may participate in a 4-H dog program. Locations of the events may differ from year to year. 4-H members should check with their Extension Agents for details.
4-H Horse Shows
Horse shows and events are conducted on the local, county, regional, district, and state levels in Pennsylvania. Ten district horse shows and the five area horse production shows serve as qualifying shows for the state 4-H horse show, which is held in Harrisburg in late October. Details about horse shows including the Pennsylvania 4-H Horse Forum and the Outstanding Equine Member Award, are published in the Pennsylvania 4-H Horse Show Rule Book.
4-H State Competitive Trail Ride
The state competitive trail ride is usually held in the Rothrock State Forest in mid-September. The ride is approximately 25 miles long and takes about 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours to complete. The program is conducted each spring in Harrisburg for youth who have participated in 4-H for a minimum of one year and are 15 years old as of January 1. Each county can send one boy and one girl plus up to three more; the final number depends on county 4-H program enrollment.
Fashion Revue
The fashion revue is a county, regional, state and national event designed to allow textile science members an opportunity to display what they have made in their project. The members are judged on the choices they have made to enhance their physical appearance and on their presentation. 4-H members may also model in the Farm Show style show, providing that they also exhibit at this event.
